Charles Hossfield History

In June we found out that the baby Shannon was carrying had a birth defect that was diagnosed as HLHS (hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrom). Since that time we have tried to prepare for his birth. He was born on October 4, 2007. He weighed 6.9 lb and was 1'7" long. When Charles was born he was immediately rushed out of the room to be stabilized so that his heart would continue to function as it did before he was born. On the following Monday he had his first of three surgeries. This one routed the blood that comes out of the right side of the heart to the body and added a shunt to the heart that directs blood to his lungs. This surgery has been a success so far. It is now Thursday and his chest has been closed. He looks good. The swelling from the surgery has gone down. He is still on a paralytic to keep him paralyzed so that he won't use up too much oxygen by moving. Things are looking good so far.

I plan to add more detail later.
